Sewer Line Belly Types and How Each One Is Repaired
The code asks for buried pipe to be supported along its whole length on a solid, continuous bed. A belly is a stretch that has dropped off that even support. How it is repaired depends on how long the dip is, where it sits and what is on top of it.

Shallow Sag Holding Standing Water
A shallow belly shows on camera as water lying in one stretch after the line has drained. This Old House lists minor pipe sagging among the faults a targeted repair can handle when the rest of the pipe is sound. Ask for the footage at the start and end of the water so the dig can be kept to that length.
Long or Deep Belly
This Old House says targeted repairs suit problems that are small and localized. Where the sag is not, the sunken length comes out and goes back at the right fall. If the trench bottom is soft, the code requires digging at least two pipe diameters deeper and refilling with fine gravel, crushed stone or a concrete base before the pipe goes back.
Belly at the Foundation Exit
The code limits a trench dug alongside a footing or wall: it can't reach into the footing's bearing plane, which runs down at 45 degrees from the outside bottom edge of the footing. That can shape how the plumber reaches a sag tight against the house.

Belly Under a Driveway or Walk
Concrete adds removal and repair to the job. HomeGuide puts concrete removal at $3 to $8 a square foot extra, and Bob Vila averages $1,750 for repairing a driveway after sewer work. A belly under concrete is still dug.
Bedding and Backfill for the Re-Laid Section
Pipe sinks where the ground under it settles. For new work the code wants backfill placed in 6-inch layers, tamped until 12 inches of earth cover the pipe, compacted under and beside it and brought up evenly on both sides so the pipe stays aligned. Pipe can't be propped on blocks to grade. Ask how the new section will be bedded and backfilled.

Sewer Line Slope Rules in Mobile's Plumbing Code
Mobile adopted the 2021 International Plumbing Code as its plumbing code. Table 704.1 sets the minimum fall for horizontal drain pipe by size:
2 1/2 inches or smaller
1/4 inch per foot.3 to 6 inches
1/8 inch per foot.8 inches or larger
1/16 inch per foot.
Mobile's own amendment sets 4 inches as the smallest building sewer, so a house lateral here falls in the 3- to 6-inch row: about 6 1/4 inches of drop over 50 feet and 12 1/2 inches over 100. Section 704.1 also requires drain pipe to be laid "in uniform alignment at uniform slopes", which is the rule a belly breaks.
Why Lining and Bursting Don't Fix a Belly
Cost guides group cured-in-place lining and pipe bursting with the trenchless methods they say aren't suitable for improper sloping, and point to excavation. Lining or bursting may still suit the rest of the run once the low stretch has been re-laid; compare cured-in-place lining and trenchless replacement.
