Septic to Sewer Conversion, Step by Step
Before anything else, check that MAWSS serves your street; its website answers that with a service-area map. The work then splits into the jobs below.

Pumping and Filling the Old Septic Tank
Alabama's health rule says a tank whose use stops is abandoned. It is pumped out by a pumper licensed by the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board, then either removed or filled with sand or soil, and its bottom may be broken open. Mobile's plumbing code adds that the permit holder pumps and fills it when the house connects to public sewer. HomeGuide says most owners fill the tank with sand rather than pay extra to remove it.
Removing the Tank Instead
The state rule lets the owner remove an empty tank, and the hole is then filled with sand or soil. Removal costs more but frees the ground, which matters if a slab, shed or driveway is planned where the tank sits.
New Gravity Building Sewer to the MAWSS Tap
The pipe that ran to the tank is rerouted toward the street. Mobile's code sets the floor: no building sewer under 4 inches, and the two-way cleanout the city asks for at the junction with the building sewer (cleanout rules). Pipe lighter than Schedule 40 pressure-rated on a public sewer needs at least 12 inches of cover and can't run under a driveway or parking area. The fall per foot is on the belly repair page.

Grinder Pump Where Gravity Won't Reach
Some lots sit too low for the house sewer to fall to the main. MAWSS policy covers this case: a grinder pump on a MAWSS connection must be one of the pumps on its accepted list, and MAWSS doesn't maintain the grinder station. Where a customer has to come off the gravity system because of a grade conflict, MAWSS may help with the cost of a pressure sewer if the owner gets quotes from three licensed plumbers and finishes the work within 60 days.
Streets With No Sewer Main Yet
If the main hasn't reached your street, a plumber can't connect you. MAWSS lets residents of an existing community ask it to extend sewer: they submit a map, the area, and a survey of likely users, and MAWSS contributes toward the cost if the project pays back in 20 years or less.

Why Mobile homeowners, landlords and businesses call Mobile Sewer Line Replacement
- One licensed plumber gets the request, not a bidding list
- No charge to you for the introduction
- Ask to keep the camera video from before and after
- Alabama plumbing licenses can be checked online
Septic to Sewer Conversion Cost in Mobile
HomeGuide's $3,000 to $15,000 national range covers decommissioning the tank, a new main sewer line and the connection. MAWSS's own capacity and tap charges come on top, and some owners can finance them; the 2025 amounts and terms are on the sewer line installation page.
HomeGuide names distance from the main line and the digging method among the things that move a hookup price. Ask for a quote that lists the pumper's charge, fill material and the plumbing permit separately.
Who Does What When You Leave Septic
Alabama splits the work. The plumbers' board treats septic systems permitted by the health department as onsite systems, not plumbing, and says a pump that is part of an onsite system needs an installer licensed by the Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board. The new building sewer that connects to the public sewer is plumbing, and must be done by a plumber certified by the state plumbing board. MAWSS adds that a licensed plumber has to connect the private lateral to the public lateral. How to check that license is on the sewer line repair page.
